FESTIVITIES OF ALFAFAR
PATRON SAINT FESTIVITY
Alfafar has a long history of local festivities, some of them with a religious tradition, participating different associations and religious fraternities from the town.
Alfafar's festivities are intimately related to the town's customs and location. As a result of its location in the area L'Horta (the orchard literally in Valencian, since it is a cultivation area), its economy has been based on the rice cultivation. For this reason, the main festivity in Alfafar started after the rice harvest. However, there have been many changes in the way the festivities are celebrated throughout their history.
HISTORICAL FESTIVITIES
In the past, during festivities such as Easter Week the believers would gather in church for mass, to recall the Stations of the Cross or the Holy Burial, and then the people of the town would have the traditional mona (a kind of cake) by the ravine Paiporta and play traditional games during this time. Easter would end with combregar d’impedits, still carried out nowadays on San Vicente Ferrer festivity.
In the late 70's there were big changes in the town due to immigration, increasing the number of inhabitants and therefore adapting the festivities to the circumstances and other suggestions.
Currently, the Patron Saint Festivities take place in August, being Virgen del Don festivity on the 8 of September the most significant day. Also, there are other acts dedicated to Virgen del Socorro, San Sebastián, Virgen de Agosto and Virgen La Purísima. Once the events are over, Virgen del Don's statue is taken back to the municipal cemetery and a holy mass takes place on the 17 of September.
In May, there is the tradition of decorating the streets of the town with flowers for the festivity of Cruz de Mayo.
FALLAS FESTIVITY
In March, the local fallas board, along with the six fallas existing in Alfafar, celebrate instensely for Josefina festivity.
