COLOMBICULTURA

The Community of Valencia is where pigeon breeding has become more common in Spain, maybe because this hobbie was inherited from the arabic culture, which has a lot of influence on these lands.

The love for the pouter pigeons captured strongly, breed that was obtained after several crossings, a good bearing and soberb aspect specimen with a bulky crop. Very often the distraction practiced with the pigeon was far from being a ludic and honest activity. This created an alarming situation, what made a group of honest prigeon-breeders worrie, who decided to organize themselves for stopping the chaos.

In this way, was started the first organized cell, what was the base for giving an administrative structure to this peculiar sport, genuinely Spanish and very Valencian, in spite of the Murcian deep roots.

It is an ecological sport involving breed and “pica” pigeons, admired and rated by their beauty, flight and persistence in courting a female.

In our region the practice of breeding “pica” pigeon or pigeons for competitions consists of training males to use their seduction and intelligence skills to attract a female called “suelta", which is identified by a white feather in the tail, that is, a struggle between males for the possession of a female.

To get a quality pigeon chick, lots of trials and crosses between different breeds must be made, providing good food and hygiene in order to prevent diseases and achieve the best physical and athletic condition.

Pigeon training begins after the 3 months of life, with the appearance of the first signs of maturity. The young specimen gets encaged with a “suelta" female with a white feather in the tail that will end up representing a sex symbol for the male. It is advisable to release the pigeon with the female for a few days.

Afterwards, the pigeon will be enclosed along with other males and a female so that the chick can learn to fight for her.
