FESTIVALS DEL VALLE DE GüÍAMAR
Romería de San Agustín (Arafo)
The Romería de San Agustín is celebrated the last Saturday of August, on the second day of the festivals to honour the patron saints: San Juan Degollado, San Agustín, and San Bernardo. There is a huge gathering of pilgrims at the plazoleta de la Cruz at 5pm before starting the pilgrimage on the most representative streets of Arafo.
This pilgrimage commemorates a miracle attributed to the intercession of San Agustín in 1751, since a storm cleared the dangerous gorge of Añavingo that had been buried by a landslide.
The San Agustín pilgrimage began to be celebrated in 1975, as part of the festival programme to honour the patron saint. In 1983 it was declared to be a festival of National Tourist Interest in Spain.
