Also known as "día de la mona" , celebrated on a Monday, godfathers usually give their godsons a "mona", a brioche with chocolate.
In Catalonia, it is traditional to celebrate Easter Sunday with "caramelles", religious and thanking songs. In Spain, this day is also known as "Domingo de Resurrección" (Resurrection Sunday).
History
The word "mona" comes from the Arabic "munna" meaning "gift" or "present". In past eras, the mona was a cake decorated with one or two eggs, but with time passing, it was replaced by pure chocolate.
Traditionally, the "mona" was a ring-shaped cake with eggs, depending on the age of the child, but in the 19th century it turned into a cake with butter and chocolate topped by eggs, cookies and candied fruit. In the past, it was eaten in the countryside or the beach where it was given to the child until he was 12 years old,as a kind of ritual before reaching adolescence.
