CASTELLERS

Castellers

This is undoubtedly the most representative cultural activity of Catalonia. It consists in building tall human towers, the so-called “castells.” Although its origin is not clear, the castell building is a traditional sport deep-rooted in Catalonia, especially in the north of the province of Tarragona and south of the province of Barcelona.

The building of these human towers requires a great deal of effort, abilities and good coordination. Currently, the “castellers” are a spectacle for exhibition or competition, in which the associations called “colles,” after a hard year of training, compete for the tallest human tower. The towers are made up of people of both sexes and different ages. The most tallest human towers may reach even 15 people high.

The basis of the “castell” is called “pinya” and is made up of the greatest number of people holding the weight and balancing the tower; then the crucial part for the tower to remain erect made up by the first level of people (“els baixos”) and the second one (“els segons”) on which the rest levels will be built. Obviously, the upper part is made up by children.
